Japan – Anime, Manga, Jpop & Jrock

Jrock is the rock genre of music in Japan. Heavily influenced in fashion by the style of manga and anime which kind of is a combination of gothic, emo and punk style, the sound is kind of combination of pop and electronic. Jpop is the japanese version of pop music, often appearing in anime and animated movie films.

You may be wondering why I decided to write about this topic; however, the fashion, movie and music industry in Japan and Asia in general are all influenced by this as can easily be observed during a visit to Japan. The culture is equally influenced and displayed in anime, as can be easily be observed and learnt from watching these things. Just one important thing I’d like to mention is that anime, although animated and therefore perhaps easily compared and confused with cartoons in our culture are not the same and not always suitable fo children, as the story, scenes and content often can be mature.

Anime is a commonly used term that refers to a style of animation originating from Japan. The style, which is mostly recognizable by the large, sleek, or sparkly eyes and spiky or flowy, shiny hair styles of the characters (similar to emo hair), tall and lanky body types for men and short, cute body type for girls, both having frail hands with long, thin fingers, their fashion sense, which will vary on the type of character and their current situation (school uniform for teenagers and young adults, gothic, military, grunge etc for others) and vibrant use of colours and flashing images and use of strong line for action scenes and dreamy, bubbly and sparkly backgrounds for scenes of emotion. Manga is the graphic novel (comic) version of this style and this style can often be observed in Videogames as well. These things can be very influential, the passion of the characters being impressive and fashion style being cool and inspiring. The storyline of these animations usually are very fascinating, the romance being pure and passionate, things like honour and defending what you believe in top priority. I haven’t watched any in ages; however, titles that count as my favourites and I can highly recommend are, as follows:

The Rose of Versailles/Lady Oscar (ベルサイユのばら Berusaiyu no Bara)

Released in the early 70’s, this is one of the most well-known and influential mangas ever, having been adapted into an anime, musical and movie and been released all over the world. It had a great influence on the young women of the late 70s, early 80s and continues to influence women today. Set in France around the period of the French Revolution, the story revolves around the main character named Oscar François de Jarjayes (Lady Oscar), the daughter and youngest born into the family of the General of the Royal French Guard. Because Oscar was the last born and her mother had passed away giving birth her father took the decision to raise her as a son in order to follow in his footsteps. The story continues with the introduction of Marie Antoinette of Austria, who was to marry Louis and become Queen of France and goes on to introduce various other fictional as well as actual key historical persona of the French Revolution and mainly is revolved around the life of Lady Oscar and her different roles and experiences throughout her career and later, the French Revolution. It displays the life of a woman being raised and expected to take on the role of a man and struggle and confusion as she begins to develop romantic feelings inspiring her to embrace her female nature and desire to live life as a woman as she matures. One of the many impressive features of this anime is the style of the characters and military uniforms, which are beautiful and what inspired me to draw as a child, teenager and young adult. The many historical facts about France and the French Revolution make the story informative and educational as well. Actual historical locations that appear in the story include the Château of Versailles and Paris, France, as well as Schloß Schönbrunn in Vienna, Austria, which is where Marie Antoinette and Maria Theresa resided.

The story revolves around Takumi, the son of a Tofu shop owner that has been delivering Tofu in the mountainous area since the early age of 13. The father, being a skilled driver, taught his son to drive the windy roads using a paper cup filled with water in order to improve his skills by not allowing water to be spilt when taking the corners. He developed amazing drifting skills as a result which was first discovered by another driver one evening in the first episode who, through his aggressive tailing and trying to overtake Takumi irritated him and did not let him pass but easily beat the driver through his drifting skills around the corners by use of the gutters. The driver couldn’t believe it and as word travelled fast skilled drivers from various drift clubs throughout the country came to drive the route late at night in order to find the mystery driver and challenge him. The anime is very interesting, as it introduces many technical facts about the vehicles and also driving/drift techniques. The animation style, which takes a little time to get used to the awkward style of the characters, is alright, but the most interesting feature about the style is the way the vehicles are always computer rendered and appear digitalized rather than animated and the dance soundtrack is catchy and amusing.

My favourite example of Japanese music:
