“El Colectivo” – Car Pooling in the Mayan Riviera Cancun, Mexico

Mayan Riviera Cancun

During my recent visit to the Mayan Riviera in Mexico I decided that I wanted to visit Cancun and Tulum. In order to do this, there were several options available from guided tours to taxis. We took a guided tour to the Chichen Itza, as this was the easiest and best option and quite frankly included everything we needed. For Cancun and Tulum; however, it wasn’t necessary to have the whole shebang and therefore we decided to do this on our own.

A Taxi offered to take us on a private tour to Cancun for around $120 which would include the market, beach, hotel zone etc but we were keen on exploring the area so we decided to explore on our own. In Mexico it is common for Bus stops to be located on the highway just outside the resort, which is usually located on the coast side of the highway route which runs from Cancun (North) to Tulum (South). There, a Bus/Carpool service known as “el colectivo” which means collective runs all the way from the north to the south on a regular basis.

Acting as a kind of Car pool, this service seems to be run by a local taxi company running along the highway collecting and dropping people off along the way, usually locals and employees of the resorts commuting to and from work. At this bus stop outside the resort these car pool buses stop to drop off and pick up clients for the low-cost of about $7 (ish) to Tulum and $5 Playa del Carmen, where you have to change onto another ‘el colectivo’ to Cancun for around another $8 (ish) I think it was.

From where my resort was located, about half an hour to Tulum and about 20 mins to Playa del Carmen, and then another hour or so to Cancun to give you a rough idea on the duration of time and value for money. Since it is kind of like a bus/carpool service they obviously drop you off a bit off from where you want to go from but in general they always drop you off in a central location very close and a short walk to where you are looking to go.

The first time it was a bit strange as you were getting onto a random bus with the locals and not sure about where you’re going but after that it was totally fine, the locals are completely normal and don’t care much at all about you so I guess in a way it’s a great way to brush shoulders with them and see what a normal day there is like?
