Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games

Glasgow2014

Glasgow 2014 HockeyBack in November of 2007 Glasgow was in an ecstatic mood. Nigeria (who had just lost out on the bid) and the rest of Africa probably heard the cheer when it was announced that it would be Glasgow who would be hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games. 7 years on the city’s atmosphere still bears a unique buzz as ‘the friendly games’ have exploded into life.

These Games are the 20th installment in a sporting series that has given the world some truly magical moments and have propelled several athletes to new heights. The debut of the games was back in 1930 where it was held in Hamilton, Canada and originally named “The British Empire Games”.

It was renamed a couple of times until finally, in 1978 the name was amended to the “Commonwealth Games” in Edmonton, Canada which is what it remains known as today. This sporting even is held every 4 years and with 71 teams/nations competing, Glasgow has opened its doors to people from across the world to come and immerse themselves in a festival of healthy competition, fun and excitement.

Dubbed ‘the friendly games’ due to the vibrant atmosphere and nature of these Games, Glasgow’s hosting of the four-yearly sporting event has been remarkable. A great amount of work has clearly gone into making the city an entertaining and joyous place to be, with events taking place all over as part of Festival 2014.

At GGlasgow 2014 Velodromelasgow Green – the city’s oldest park – family activities, live music, comedy and dance are all being served up as part of Glasgow Green Live Zone. The Green will also be hosting some of the live sport with two cycling events starting and finishing in the Live Zone and the marathon which has already taken place.

Specially extended for the Games, the Merchant City Festival is one of Glasgow’s annual cultural festivals and has added a flamboyant, carnival atmosphere to this massive period in Glasgow’s story. Street theatre, visual art, music, dance, comedy and food are all being combined to inject a distinctive spice to Festival 2014.

The Kelvingrove Bandstand has made a return to its old glory and has been incredibly busy over the past week or so. Closed in 1999 because of the condition it was in, it’s now back in action and has hosted all sorts of Festival 2014 events including an exploration of Scottish Cinema’s archive, children’s visual art screenings, presentations from the Scottish Refugee Council and also a performance from the Scottish Senior Citizens Orchestra.
