My first visit to the Himalayas – Recap

The Himalayas

Late last week I started posting journal entries I had kept during my first visit to Nepal. Some of it may have been a bit shocking and I thought long and hard before posting them; however, at the same time I didn’t want to deform the actual experience I had during my trip and want to be able to offer authentic information to my readers, which is why I decided to go ahead with it.

Of course, it having been my first experience outside Europe or North America and having been on my own, I guess it’s normal that I reacted the way I did and wrote the things I did. The first time we go to another part of the world which is so much different from what we are used to, the feeling of being lost and overwhelmed by what is known as culture shock, is inevitable (unless, of course you blind fold yourself, get into a limo which brings you to your 5* hotel, where you are secluded from everything until your departure, which again you can do blindfolded… also known as a resort experience, haha just kidding!).

I spent only 3 days there before heading to Bhutan and looking back on it, I’d have to say that this was without doubt my most amazing experience to date. It was crazy, adventurous and scary but one of those things you look back on with excitement. The fact it led to a trip to Bhutan, where great effort is made to sustain the culture and the impact of tourism and the outside world is limited, of course, plays a big part in this.

I think a combination of the two the way I did it is definitely the way to go and I doubt I would have gone to either place on its own, simply because of the fact that they complimented each other and the difference between the two compromised what the other lacked. Bhutan being a calm, secluded, quiet kingdom high up in the Himalayas, cut off from the rest of the world, was a great way to relax after the excitement and craziness of the three days in Kathmandu and very necessary.

On its own; however, I might have been a bit bored (most people interested in visiting Bhutan are older, more experienced travellers). Kathmandu being the experience it was would have left me in panic and restless, had I returned directly home afterwards, of course that’s only because I visited the capital only, would have without a doubt been different, had I spent a couple of days trekking or camping in the amazing mountains there, perhaps visited the Mt. Everest base camp (next time for sure).
