Introduction

My name is Birgit Thorya. My parents, both Austrian, met in Vancouver Canada which is where I was born making me Austrian-Canadian.

The next question I usually get is whether I am more Canadian or more Austrian and which of the two I prefer. Having really grown up back and forth between the two I do not feel any more of either. I love and am proud to be from both my countries, couldn’t have wished for a better arrangement and, like all places, each has their advantages and disadvantages.

I grew up and was educated in both countries and later completed my education at the University of Strathclyde, which is what led me to Scotland for the first time. There I was offered a scholarship to attend the PDP – Professional Development Program – at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, where I was able to meet many interesting people in the hotel and hospitality industry around the world.

Hotels and travelling have always been part of my life (yes, that’s me and my brother on the left ^_^). I took my first steps as a child in the Westin Bayshore Inn hotel in Vancouver, Canada and later began my career working in guest services of 5* hotels and was therefore fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to live and work in many different countries, make friends with amazing people from amazing places and learn about their cultures. After having graduated from College in Austria I spent a couple of years in Paris, France where I had gone in order to pursue the French language and remained there until I was completely fluent. There, having for the first time actually lived in another country other than Austria and Canada I was able to learn all about the Parisiennes and the French culture, understand and truly appreciate the things they do, food, wine, life.

My Hotel career has also taken me to live and work in one of the most established hotels of the city of Brussels, the Capital of the European Union; an amazing experience from which I took back many skills dealing with internationally recognized high profile clients that required high security arrangements. Somehow I always was interested in other countries and cultures, have always been fortunate enough to meet many wonderful and interesting people from Japan, China and South East Asia, which is where most of my best friends are from. I later was exposed to Bhutan and Nepal, where again I learned all about and to appreciate their culture and way of thinking.

You may be wondering why I have decided to introduce myself to you. In fact, I am the person you will be speaking to from the first moment you contact Thorya Travel Consultancy. I want to offer a truly unique and personal experience and therefore would like you to know from the beginning about the person you will meet. I will help you identify your travel dream and the necessary steps to put it together. I will organize it for you and use my personal experience and contacts in order to ensure you get the most of your experience.
