Rhodes – Road trip around the island

Monolithos Castle

So this year our compromise ended up to be in Rhodes. The little island is ideal for a one or two-day road trip (depending on what you want to see), since it’s not too big and the main roads are really easy to follow (pretty much one big circle around the island haha). The guy we rented the car from did an amazing job and gave us a map of interesting places to see. That and a quick look on tripadvisor to ensure we have all the things that interest us on our checklist and our trip was all planned! We decided to get the capital of Rhodes City out-of-the-way a day or two earlier just so that we would be able to focus on the island for the day, simply because the city alone offered way too much to cram in altogether. One amazing feature of the island is the difference between the two sides. The west, which is mountainous and less inhabited/not touristy at all is located on the Aegean Seaside. The vegetation is completely different and if you didn’t know better, you could almost think you’ve somehow found yourself in another place altogether! The east is where the resort towns and visitors usually stay and thus, also more concentrated on the tourism side of things (Lindos, Resort town of Kolymbia and, from what I’ve heard, the party town of Faliraki). It’s located on the Mediterranean Seaside and has a more desert kind of vegetation.

So, on to our road trip! We started towards Lindos, which, although an absolutely lovely little town (the kind you find on the postcards) was very touristy (not my favourite kind of thing). Still, been there, done that and happy about it because the Church of Panagia and Acropolis (€6 per Adult) were very much worth it. We then headed south to what, in my opinion was the coolest bit of the trip, Prasonisi Beach. Now according to people’s reviews on tripadvisor they’re all like bla bla bla one big sandy beach bla bla bla nothing spectacular but worth the visit because the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas meet but to be honest, I much preferred this one over all the other people packed beaches people on tripadvisor suggested (we didn’t even bother with St. Paul’s Bay, had a look at it from the Acropolis and that was us sorted, although very nice, there were just too many people there and to be honest, every beach is lovely on this island, so…). First of all the space is huge! Sand, sand, sand and not one, but two seas to choose from! One calm, the other a bit more temperamental and very cool when they meet as the waves come from both sides and clash in the middle due to the different currents, not many places in the world you can experience this (and have each foot in another sea)!

Next we continued to Monolithos, the ruins of a castle located on the top of a kind of hill/cliff kind of thing. There’s a little chapel up there where you can light a candle for a loved one, which is kind of nice. Monolithos is a really good place to buy local produce like home-made olive oil, ouzo, honey, as well as other spirits (grape and mandarin liquors) from local people, rather than all those touristy places you find in the city. Onwards to the Village of Siana (apparantly great for its honey) and then can either continue along the coast to Kritinia Castle, Kamiros, an ancient city of ruins (€4 per adult) and then cut across back to the 7 springs and where we were staying (this is what we did because there are enough mountains where I come from, live in a lovely mountain village in Austria and was therefore more interested in Kamiros, not going to find many ancient broken down towns in Austria or Canada, eh?).

Alternatively you can continue along the mountains from Siana to Ebona, the highest village on the island, famous for their wine and then head back to the 7 Springs area, which, again is back to where we started. Other things to do is visit the valley of butterflies, a lovely natural area to visit, but we skipped that as well as we had seen plenty of butterflies in the Dominican last year.
