Sailing in Scotland

Sailing in ScotlandLast week I experienced sailing for the very first time. Sailing not too far off Scotland’s west coast, we worked our way from James Watt Marina in Greenock down the Firth of Clyde and around the islands of Arran, Bute and the Kyles of Bute. As well as learning some of the basics of sailing I also developed an understanding of just how spectacularly scenic Scotland is.

A remarkably easy on the eye coastal town, Greenock is home to the first dock on the Clyde and its most famous son – James Watt – pioneered the steam engine. From the marina named after him we set sail for Portavadie, Argyll, as part of a small ships sailing race.

Getting there took over 12 hours due to there being no wind (and the fact we were sailing novices.) The long sail and the gleaming sun (don’t you just love it when the sun shines on the water and creates that gorgeous glow) allowed us to take in the sights under the very best of conditions. At night the glow moved upwards from the sea to the sky. Seeing the stars at night from the middle of the sea is an unforgettable experience.

The race ended in Portavadie, a notably luxury marina that has rather fancy flats for hire that overlook the docked boats. Even if you weren’t sailing or were remotely interested in sailing, and wanted accommodation in Argyll perhaps, Portavadie would make for a relatively luxury stay in some relatively different surroundings.

The week-long sailing trip culminated in a final flotilla which was organised as a celebration as part of the 2014 Commonwealth Games. 250 boats sailed to Glasgow’s Pacific Quay from Greenock; it was the largest flotilla ever seen on the Clyde. The crowds that gathered to watch were incredible and the whole experience really was unforgettable.

For those interested in sailing, or even for those who aren’t but still like being on a boat, the Royal Yachting Association offer a Hire and Charter service where you can hire a boat and a skipper to sail it, allowing you to go and soak up the wonders of the sea while your skipper keeps you on a steady course. Having gotten a taste for sailing I think I myself might just make use of it.
