With the current pandemic and travel restrictions many are opting for a staycation instead of the traditional vacation abroad. Although we miss the buzz of travel we can use of the opportunity to discover beautiful places closer to home. A staycation at Gleneagles was therefore a much welcomed idea.

We decided to visit Gleneagles with the kids for a much needed change of scene and celebrate a special occasion. I originally planned it for my birthday in December but postponed to March and then cancelled because of the pandemic. So I jumped at the opportunity to rebook as soon as restrictions eased.

Reservation process:

Reservation

The booking process was very simple and straightforward. I decided to contact the hotel by email to check for availability and special rates. This also gave me the opportunity to have contact for further information and book things to do during our stay. It currently is necessary to book things such as a swimming slot due to the pandemic. Once the reservation department had completed my booking I received an email and itinerary from the Playground Planners, who are dedicated to planning your stay at the hotel. I greatly appreciated that they booked my breakfast as well, which took the hassle of out of thinking about times. I also liked that the agent I was in contact with back in December got back in touch to check on me. This made me more happy about my choice of a Staycation at Gleneagles.

Dining:

Steak tartare and Porchetta at the Birnham Brasserie

With 11 F&B outlets you are well covered and spoiled for choice with your staycation at Gleneagles. Since the kids were joining us the choice was narrowed down to two possibilities. This is actually great because anyone with young children will appreciate the thought required to plan an overnight stay away. We visited Gleneagles for a dinner and afternoon tea so I tried to book a restaurant we hadn’t been to. We opted for dinner in the Birnham Brasserie, since the menu included things I really wanted.

The restaurant was lovely with Plenty of space. The staff were very attentive of the kids and brought us colouring packs to keep them entertained. Breakfast was served in the Strathearn, which is also a fine dining restaurant. This was evident due to the beautiful setting which I really loved. The Gleneagles came up with a great solution to the current indoor drinking restrictions with themed outdoor bars as well.

Leisure and Activities:

Lawn games at Gleneagles

The Gleneagles prides themselves on being a “glorious playground” and have plenty of activities to keep you entertained. Activities include falconry, off roading, horseback riding and actual hunting. They also have a shooting range, archery facilities as well as fishing, tennis and golf opportunities. The riding school offers an excellent opportunity to learn the different levels of riding from beginner to dressage. For the kiddies the lead reign lesson on a cute shetland small pony will have them jumping for joy. They also have a gundog school with fun lessons for the whole family to actual dog training.

Young children are great in the sense that they are easily entertained and always able to have fun. Give them new surroundings, a long hall to run up and down and a pool and they’re happy. That being said there are lots of great activities available completely free of charge. The gallery is great for window (or actual) shopping, bicycles and beautiful grounds to walk and explore are great but the thing I really liked were the lawn games located at the game house just outside. A great way to interact and socialise and sun loungers spotted around the area offer an inviting space to take a break and catch some rays.

Spa, beauty & wellness:

A luxury hotel simply wouldn’t be a luxury hotel without a pool and spa facilities, which do not fall short here. With three swimming options, two for adults only every type of guest is able to enjoy the kind of swimming experience they prefer.

The large pool and jacuzzi are great for families, the highlight being the beach style shallow end which is ideal for young children due to the depth beginning ultra shallow and gradually increasing the more inwards you go. The outdoor thermal Pool is a pleasure reminding me of those frequently found in the popular wellness hotels in europe, such as Sarvar in Hungary. The full length lap pool with dark atmosphere offers a more grown up feel to it which is also where the sauna and steam rooms can be found. The beauty salon offers everything from hair & nails to full beauty treatments and massages and the gym offers state of the art equipment and fitness classes for those looking for a serious workout.

The room.

I suppose one of the most important parts of a hotel stay is the actual room and this did not disappoint. Because we are a family of four we opted for an Estate double room in the main house. This is the largest category of room before the suites. With 40m2 there is plenty of space for an extra bed or requesting the sofa bed to be prepared with the turn down service.

Since our children are very young we had an extra bed and cot because we didn’t want the sofa bed to take over the space. The king sized bed was great for lounging with the kids, and the vanity desk and full length mirror are ideal for getting ready. The view of the hotel and décor of the rooms were lovely, the bathroom being well equipped with a classic, free standing bath and separate tiled, walk in rain shower.

Our staycation at Gleneagles was a great experience and something we would definitely repeat sometime in the future. A bientôt alors !
