On the trail of Christopher Columbus – Dominican Republic History

On the trail of Christopher Columbus

Last year, like this year, was one of those years we had absolutely no idea where to go on holiday. I was wanting something crazy, exotic and far away. Meanwhile my boyfriend was looking for something of a more common calibre: white sand, blue water, nice resort and sun sun sun. Finally, we decided to compromise and agreed to go to the Dominican Republic and, in all honesty, I couldn’t have chosen a better place.

The resort was absolutely wonderful as was the location, not only beautiful but also historical. Dominican Republic history is really quite something. I was amazed at how many things I learned with no effort at all. It turned out that Santo Domingo is the oldest European city in the Americas, dating back to 1496 and became home of not only Christopher Columbus himself, but his son Diego, who had a palace erected there. This palace can be visited today, as well as the Cathedral of Santa Maria, which, dating back to 1514-20, is in fact the first cathedral of the new world.

The lighthouse, which is where Christopher Columbus rests (apparently he rests in many locations ^_^;;) is shaped like a cross and also lights up the sky in the same shape, these are only a few of the many things I learned on this trip (don’t want to give too much away or you might not learn anything at all during your visit there ;D).

In addition to the busy day trip loaded with fascinating facts we went on a couple of other excursions, which included a catamaran ride to some deserted islands. For the explorer types there are jungle adventure and river excursions you can go on, where you may come across some familiar places that you might have seen on the big screen in movies such as Jurassic Park.
