Castle Spa Hotel Kapitány – Castle Hotel Hungary

Sumeg Castle

Sumeg Hungary

Castle Hotel Hungary:

Sümeg is a little town located  in the  Veszprém county of Hungary, about 2 hours from Vienna and 20 minutes from lake Balaton.

It is mostly known for the late 13th century Sümeg Castle, which has been restored and hosts several special events today.

Hotel KapitányHotel Kapitány is located at the foot of the hill and offers a friendly and relaxing atmosphere with lots of leisure facilities including an indoor and outdoor pool, children’s pool, jacuzzi and various Sauna and steam rooms, as is to be expected from the typical Hungarian Spa facilities popular in this part of Europe.

The hotel is built-in a similar style to the castle, seemingly expanding the medieval atmosphere. The 154 rooms offer the comfortable facilities a 4* hotel should, from Air-conditioning to complimentary internet.

One of the main attractions of this property are the Historical Tournaments, which take place in a Knight’s Arena located at the foot of the castle, only about 400 metres away from the hotel. The event is a combination of a horse-riding and dancing show similar to that of the Spanish Riding School so renowned in Vienna, jousting and various other competitions between the knights which included sword fights, war-axe and battle-star throwing, archery with some role play.Hungary dinner

I was invited to attend a wedding here, which provided a magical first-hand experience of a very special (Hungarian) occasion. The dining featured typical Hungarian favourites and was served banquet style with a massive selection on meats (I cannot stress how amazing this was). Sides included traditional Sauerkraut (sour cabbage) and other pickled vegetables with potatos and/or rice. The dessert was a combination of Strudel: Topfen (sweet, soft quark cheese), berry and the traditional Apfelstrudel with warm vanilla sauce and as per Hungarian tradition Guláš (Gulash) was served at midnight.

The entire experience was enchanting and I would indeed recommend this place to wedding couples looking for a medieval themed experience for their special day.
