Travel Advisor - Evolution through Travel

Recently I’ve seen a TV show called An Idiot Abroad where they take a very simple, am happy with the way things are and don’t need more kind of guy and decide to send him places in order to see the impact of this on him. “They say that travel broadens the mind” and so they want to see if this will work on this guy, who always says that he doesn’t care about meeting more people, has his “7 mates and that’s all you need in life, don’t need more” and seems to be happy enough with a simple pint in a pub and see if the opportunity to experience these amazing places will inspire him in any way. Of course it being his friends sending him on this trip they take the opportunity to use it as a practical joke and have him stay in the most terrible kinds of places you could imagine (really run down hostels, but really run down and dirty sharing with loads of people).

Anyway the point of my post is not to describe a TV show in detail (although I do have this terrible habit of going into depth detail about everything just because I’m love to make sure the other person fully understands the big picture) but am more interested in this “travel will broaden you mind” idea. I do in fact believe this because with experience comes knowledge and for example, once you have been to a place you will have a general feel of it and the second time you go to, Kathmandu in my case, for example, you will feel a lot more comfortable and be in a better position to move freely because you have already been there before and therefore these natural “first time in a new place” barrier will be overcome.

The thing is that our world is so diverse that every day can offer a new experience if we let it. That being said, we also can go through life and never leave our comfort zone but will never really have experienced much of anything at all. I’m not saying that you should be reckless when travelling, that’s just pure stupid (remember, precaution is better than cure, always good to be prepared and know what you’re headed into); however, in order to not limit yourself you need to push yourself a bit out of your comfort zone and explore a bit, need to be open to new things. There’s a whole world to explore in each destination, culture, traditions, history, fashion, trends, beliefs, cuisine! To be paranoid is to limit yourself and be weak, children often are sick when they are young because their body builds their immune system. Once the body has experienced and overcome an illness it is able to better defend itself because it has already had the experience and knows how to defend itself. We are able to make better decisions once we have made bad ones because we learned from them and just like these things we can learn from our travels by experiencing new things.

Any travel advisor or agent can offer you an all-inclusive stay at a resort miles away from anything anywhere in the world if you want and you may get nothing out of it except the sea and sun which, quite frankly you could have probably gotten somewhere a lot closer for a lot less money. I suggest you do visit some of the things there, definitely at least do a day trip or two or however many you want to.

It’s a bit hard being a tourist or traveller in another place because we kind of become a bit of a target to sell things to. It’s a shame and is a bit annoying to deal with but luckily not all places are super touristy and even when visiting a place that is, don’t let yourself be intimidated! Find out about the resources and facilities you have, try their food! Once you know the options you’ll be able to make better decisions, after a while you’ll get used to being in another place and be more relaxed and able to enjoy what your destination truly has to offer, there are ways to avoid awkward situations as well just think a bit (ie try and be discreet when carrying cash).
