Grinzing, Vienna

Grinzing – An authentically Austrian experience

A must-see when visiting Vienna is the small village of Grinzing, located in the northwest of Vienna, famous for the familiar “Heuriger” typical of Austria. A Heuriger is a wine tavern run by the local vineyard/winemakers and the place from where they sell their most recent wine in addition to a bunch of snacks unique to such taverns. Only the local wine is sold here and all the snacks are home-made and of local produce. Heuriger are normally open seasonal and according to wine produce and can be identified by a couple of fir twigs tied together usually with a red (and/or sometimes white) ribbbon, which is usually hung above the door to be seen from the street. Music, unless live, is forbidden and you will not find a more comfortable place to relax and enjoy the simplicity of a typical Austrian atmosphere than in a local Gasthaus or Heuriger. Which is why a road trip is an ideal way to get to know the country and its beautiful sights.
